Those who think the "information revolution" of the subtitle refers only to the current electronic transformation, will be surprised to discover how big a piece of history Levinson bites off. In this philosophical ramble, Levinson, who teaches at Hofstra University and the New School for Social Research, and, as president of Connected Education, offers graduate courses on the Internet, reaches back to the invention of the alphabet. In early chapters on the development of the printing press in China, public education in America and such 19th-century inventions as photography, Levinson spreads the paint pretty thin. But when he homes in on specific technologies (telephone, electricity, radio, computer) he does offer original insights about how various media respond to basic human needs and characteristics. Some media survive better than others because they occupy important cultural-ecological niches and seem natural to human sensory perception. For instance, the radio, which provides background noise, fits with pre-technological human habits, whereas television, which must be attended to with eyes open, does not. Another valuable idea is that of "remedial" technologies that make up for deficiencies of others: the VCR, for example, compensates for the fleetingness of television images. There are interesting ideas here, but they are often obscured by sticky prose: e.g. "[T]he icon's re-enlistment of the hieroglyphic for communication service far less peripheral than road-signs partakes of a rear-view mirror reaching so far back into the past for its inspiration as to seem like the Hubble, except quite the reverse of forward and outward in its outlook."

He presents an intriguing argument that technology is becoming more human. Thought-provoking and accessible for general readers and students. The author's essays on media theory have appeared in publications including Wired and The Village Voice.

The "soft edge" of the title refers to the intangibles surrounding technology's impact on society. The second half of this overview of the development of information techonology gets mired down in elaborating on this definition, to the study's detriment. The "natural history" offered by Levinson, an educator and writer (New School for Social Research) takes the study of information from the dawn of written language to word processing, showing, for instance, how radio, which would presumably be replaced by television, survived by finding its niche with rock 'n' roll—something TV could never offer on the same scale. The implications that Levinson derives from the first part of his study, stressing the ways in which new media have always had a profound impact on human society, are often thought-provoking though sometimes unconvincing. For instance, Levinson ties the success of monotheism to the Israelites, who had an alphabet, as opposed to earlier monotheistic Egyptians, who had hieroglyphics and, thus, lower literacy rates. However, the assertion that the ancient Egyptians ever were monotheistic is only a theory, and is not substantial enough to build yet other theories on, which Levinson repeatedly attempts to do. Further pitfalls await the author as he attempts to attack the World Wide Web and artificial intelligence. His arguments increasingly ignore the larger impact of new information technology on contemporary society altogether, instead addressing such seemingly unrelated topics as copyright law, author compensation, and online education. Levinson's sprawling investigation and proliferating theories lessen the strength of his clever final chapter, which uses instant coffee asan ingenious metaphor for information—you can describe it, he says, and it is an efficient way to transport a product, but if you can't taste it, what good is it? Levinson should have excised the chapters that don't tie in with his central theme. As it stands, The Soft Edge is too soft, and without taste.

The Gospel According to Bjarne

Bjarne Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language, Third Edition (Addison-Wesley, 1997) has been available for several months. This work, by the creator of C++, is the definitive treatment of the subject and has been since its first edition in 1987. I must confess that I did not care for the first edition. I had expected a tutorial approach as elegant as the classic K&R white book. But then, K&R was about C, a programming language that supported a familiar programming model. The C++ programming model was new to most of us ten years ago, and Stroustrup's first edition was daunting, to say the least. Looking at it now, I find it far less so and much easier to read.

Comparing the first and third editions of The C++ Programming Language provides insight into how the C++ language has grown and changed in the past decade. The third edition has almost three times the number of pages and a slightly different organization. Whereas the first edition included a 67-page language reference manual at the end, the third edition includes only a language grammar section to represent formal language definition. This is appropriate. The ANSI/ISO Standard document, which is now the formal language and library definition, is itself about 750 pages long. Stroustrup plans to publish The Annotated C++ Language Standard (coauthored by Andrew Koenig, the ANSI C++ committee's Project Editor) sometime this year.

The third edition takes a tutorial approach with many of Stroustrup's personal programming philosophies. The author's explanations of how he uses language features provide examples for learning the behavior of those features. He also explains code idioms that some programmers routinely use but that he finds inappropriate.

As much as possible, the third edition reflects Standard C++. When small language features are found to be missing, particularly new ones, Stroustrup pledges to add them to a future printing.

The book includes many code examples. There is no diskette or CD-ROM, because Stroustrup avoids a teaching approach wherein readers compile and run examples. His examples are mostly code fragments that demonstrate the points he makes and the issues he addresses. The code fragments are readable, meaningful, and neither frivolous nor cute, and since you do not compile them, you need not worry that your compiler does not fully support Standard C++. There are four parts to the body of the book: "Part I: Basic Facilities;" "Part II: Abstract Mechanisms;" "Part III: The Standard Library;" and "Part IV: Design Using C++." Even if you are already a seasoned C++ programmer, Part IV, which is a rewrite of several chapters from the second edition, is worth the price of the book. It describes Stroustrup's philosophies on the design and development cycle of a software project involving C++. In his words, Part IV aims "to bridge the gap between would-be language-independent design and programming that is myopically focused on details."

The three appendixes are: "A: The C++ Grammar;" "B: Compatibility;" and "C: Technicalities." Appendix B discusses the differences between C and C++ and explains how the languages have become more compatible over time. Some of this convergence results from changes being made to the C specification (double-slash comments and no implicit int, for example). The appendix also discusses the issues related to porting C++ code from older C++ implementations, advising that, where possible, you should use the latest implementation of a compiler so that newer features are available to you.

Appendix C is about technical details that a programmer faces that are not necessarily language issues. I particularly like the discussion on the problems associated with traditional multidimensioned arrays as compared to using STL containers to achieve the same result without the headaches.

This book is an essential addition to a C++ programmer's library. It is not for dummies, and it wouldn't be my first choice for an entry-level, self-help tutorial on C++ for beginning programmers. It is, however, an excellent textbook for programmers who are self-motivated and students who study under the watchful care of a skilled instructor. As an experienced C++ programmer, I find the book useful as a reference to language usage and behavior. The author invented the language and then stayed close to the standardization and innovation process for the duration, always maintaining a careful vigilance over the evolution of his brainchild. Consequently, this book serves, for those who do not care to pore over the ANSI/ISO document (or the promised annotated version), as the authority on the Standard C++ language, how it works, and how you should use it.--Dr. Dobb's Electronic Review of Computer Books

Understanding The True Semantics of C++

Stanley Lippman is a very popular name in the C++ community, in particular because the author of this book has also written the bestselling C++ Primer (now in its third edition), which I consider one of the best companions to Stroustrup's The C++ Programming Language, and because of his activity as the editor of the well-respected C++ Report magazine.

In this text, Stanley analyzes the language from a very different perspective compared to his other excellent book: The reader is supposed to possess a good working knowledge of C++ and have some real practical experience in his/her curriculum before approaching the first page. From this level s/he is taken to real mastery of the semantics of the complexities of the language, which reserves a lot of surprises and hidden dangers to even the most skilled engineers. Almost all of the fundamental building blocks are dissected, put in a historical perspective, and explained with precision in a surprisingly easy-to-follow way.

I am convinced that much of the clarity evident even in the most intrinsically complicated passages is due to the author's choice of giving very little for granted prior to starting a thorough discussion around a tough point. This manual will surely be of little help to a neophyte, but just as surely one needs not belong to a panel of experts to benefit from its observations, because the level of complexity never gets too deep without having spent some pages of prior accessible contextual information to get everyone up to speed.

Inside the C++ Object Model is aimed at those developers who routinely use C++ but feel the discomfort of not really knowing the underlying weight of many common operations they perform or constructs they peruse. A particularly fit subset of these programmers is made up of the hardcore plumbers who pay their bills writing C++-based programming tools and libraries, or those who assume the uneasy role of the "official code optimizer" in a medium-to-large development team. Each of these programmers are going to immensely appreciate the intensive coverage of the object-oriented features offered by the language, their run-time overhead (in terms of execution time and binary size), and their influence in compilation times. This knowledge constitutes a major aid when it comes time to decide whether a certain language feature fits your needs without breaking your requirements. Moreover, along the way the text is sprinkled with interesting anecdotes explaining why certain common myths regarding C++ are nothing more than unfounded rants.

The topics and comparisons filling up the chapters are always concrete and never exceedingly academic. For example, the old C-style data manipulation is compared side-by-side with the modern encapsulation methodologies promoted by OOP, which involves inline accessors and mutators. Another chapter deals with the tricky semantics of construction and destruction, dedicating a fair amount of room to the exact circumstances that trigger the execution of constructors, destructors, copy constructors, and conversion operators. This leads to the treatment of the delicate topic of the automatic creation of temporary variables by the compiler.

Moving on, of particular interest to me are the sections focusing on the cost of virtual functions (to achieve polymorphism) compared to static-bound methods, as well as the section discussing various facets of multiple inheritance.

There are very few aspects of this book that do not deserve praise. One of them, by far the least important, is the design, which I would have preferred to be more dynamic, thereby simplifying the jumps from one point to another (which makes sense considering the typology of the contents).

The real drawback of Inside The C++ Object Model is that it is dated. Most of what Stanley says still holds true and is informative, but the language has evolved a lot since its 1996 incarnation, when the manuscript was first sent to the printers. Consequently, many of the newer features, despite their undoubted load of semantic insights and potential misconceptions, are not even touched. Namespaces are entirely forgotten, and even such crucial relatively recent elements like exceptions, templates and run-time type information receive far less coverage than they deserve. Now that the ANSI/ISO C++ committee has agreed on a final standard, I really hope Lippman will decide to take the time to update and expand his already admirable work.

"Jesus Christ was killed by the Jews, and because of that, all of the Jews will be thrown into the Danube," says a playmate to four-year-old Andris Grof Grove's original name. Born to a middle-class Jewish family in 1936, Grove, chairman of Intel, grew up in Budapest during his country's most tempestuous era. Despite avoiding deportation and death, Grove's family lived in fear during Nazi occupation and lost some rights and property. Afterwards, they lived under Soviet control. Curiously, Grove's memoir charts the routinized mundanities of his teen years seeing his teacher at the opera, being afraid to meet young women at the local public pool, the success of a short story he wrote more than life in war-torn Europe. But his discussion of contemporary politics is astute and personal "I had mixed feelings about the Communists... they had saved my mother's life and my own.... On the other hand... they increasingly interfered with our daily life." Never didactic, he remains focused on his own intellectual growth. Grove continued his education in New York after the 1956 revolution failed. The intelligence, dedication and ingenuity that earned him fame and fortune (he was Time's Man of the Year in 1997) are evident early on. He deftly balances humor e.g., subversive anti-Communist jokes from Hungary with insight into overcoming endless obstacles (from hostile foreign invasions to New York's City University system). Though lacking in drama, Grove's story stands smartly amid inspirational literature by self-made Americans. B&w photos. Andris Grof was born in 1936 in Hungary; years later, he changed his name to Andrew Grove and went on to help found the Intel Corporation, eventually becoming its CEO and chairman. Grove's memoir recounts his early life in Budapest from his perspective as a Jewish boy trying to make sense of a world torn apart by World War II, the Nazi persecution of the Jews, and the repression of communism. He describes his escape to New York City after the failed 1956 Hungarian Revolution and how he began to assimilate into American culture. His simple, evenhanded, almost unemotional writing style stands in stark contrast to the events around him, making them seem all the more horrific. While this memoir presents no broad political or historical insights, it is a poignant reminder of the great suffering that took place during the middle part of the last century. This excellent book is recommended for all public libraries and for academic libraries where there is interest in the effects of World War II or the American immigration experience. The self-portrait of a young man, now the CEO of Intel. Grove, chairman of the world's largest computer-chip company and author of several management books, reaches back to his childhood years in Budapest to produce something like a Bildungsroman in the classic tradition. Born before WWII to assimilated, middle-class Jewish parents, young Andris Grof found his life torn apart with his father's being sent to the Russian front and the Nazis taking control of Budapest. The Grofs survived the war, however, and the Communist regime that followed it, but when Russian tanks rolled into town to suppress the Hungarian revolution, Grof, then a chemistry student, took advantage of the chaos and stole across the Austrian border. From there he made it to the Bronx, talked his way into City College, and became Andy Grove, chemical engineer and American. The rest, as they say, is history. Thankfully, Grove spends little time foreshadowing his later success but instead offers a tight, simply told, extremely intimate memoir with careful attention to structure and detail: even the metaphor in the title is multifaceted, adding depth and resonance as the story moves forward. And although his family suffered during the war, Grove's tale resembles pre-war generations of immigrant success stories; laced with a sardonic, though unmistakable, faith in the American dream, it's like The Rise and Fall of David Lewinsky with a happy ending. Still, more than a few readers will find their eyes welling up when Grof's mother asks young Andris, who has zealously hidden his identity during the war, to recite a Jewish prayer to a newly arrived Russian soldier. Grove, though, maintains a steady hand and keeps thetear-jerking to a minimum. The outcome, while not earth-shattering-and possibly self-indulgent on occasion-is a polished, solid portrait of a particular time and place. .

California psychiatrist Rabinoff provides a torrent of data and statistics in a passionate attempt to educate the public about the health and economic consequences of tobacco, to inform smokers about successful strategies for quitting, and to expose the devious and deadly machinations of the tobacco industry. Good intentions, however, do not necessarily make for good books. This work reads like a tobacco activist's clipping file, offering little that is original or new. Readers interested in the sins of the tobacco industry would be better served by Richard Kluger's authoritative, Pulitzer Prize-winning Ashes to Ashes: America's Hundred-Year Cigarette War, the Public Health, and the Unabashed Triumph of Philip Morris, while libraries hoping to help patrons kick the habit should provide more focused titles, such as those produced by the American Lung Association. Recommended only for comprehensive collections.

Description:This is a CD-ROM version of patient care information notes. In alphabetical order, in an easy to use index, are listed many common clinical problems and some frequently asked patient questions. The CD-ROM is easy to install and runs in Windows, but computer requirements are not listed.
Purpose:The purpose of the CD-ROM format is to allow the user to provide patients with personalized handouts about a variety of commonly seen topics. The user can easily edit the material and has the right to reproduce the information to give to patients or to use in news letters and brochures. However, the user is prohibited from placing the information on a website or on the Internet. The concept of accessible, simply written information for patients is commendable, and a valuable addition to the level of care provided by a clinician. The work meets the intended objectives very well.
Audience:The product is intended for the practicing general ophthalmologist. It also may be used by ophthalmic subspecialists, as many of the topics covered can be seen in any ophthalmic practice. The information is apparently written by multiple authors, who are not individually credited, as the style of different entries varies somewhat. That style is simple, straightforward, not pedantic, and easy to read for patients. The editors and the editorial board, presumably the multiple authors, are experienced practicing ophthalmologists.
Features:Common clinical problems are accessed through an index alphabetized primarily by clinical problem. There are peculiarities, however,such as the topic ""getting,"" expanded to ""getting used to bifocals"" and ""getting something in your eye."" Under the term ""refraction"" is the expanded topic, ""What is a refraction and why won't the government pay for it?"" -- a useful topic for a busy clinical practice. Omitted are a few topics such as cystoid macular edema, tearing in adults, and uveitis, but what is included covers a broad range. The topics are easily accessible, the program user friendly and intuitive, and the user can print items in regular or large print text. The product offers a simple way for clinicians to improve the quality of patient care they provide.
Assessment:This is an excellent addition to a busy clinical practice. Use of personalized patient care information should improve patient satisfaction with the level of care provided.

Before Star Wars creator George Lucas became one of today's most innovative filmmakers, he was just a geek with visionary ideas and talent. A filmmaker and educator, Rubin once worked in the computer division of Lucasfilm as a technological consultant for Star Wars Episodes I, II, and III; here, he recounts how Lucas bucked the Hollywood studios and made unique contributions to the film industry, drawing on interviews with past and present movers and shakers at Lucasfilm, Pixar, and Zoetrope studios. Like Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg, Lucas worked with an eclectic group of computer geniuses who helped launch a new era of filmmaking techniques and took computer animation and editing to new levels. There are many books on Lucas, but none quite like this one: the combination of Rubin's insider information and research gives readers a view of how movies came to incorporate digital advances. Welcome to Beyond the C++ Standard Library: An Introduction to Boost.

If you are interested in generic programming, library design, and the C++ Standard Library, this book is for you. Because the intended audience for the book is intermediate to advanced C++ programmers, there is little coverage of basic C++ concepts. As the title suggests, the focus of this book is on the Boost libraries—general usage, best practices, implementation techniques, and design rationale.

Almost from the day I discovered Boost, the people behind it, and the extraordinary libraries in it, I've wanted to write this book. It is amazing that a language as mature as C++ still offers room for exploration into higher-level abstractions as well as technical detail, all without requiring changes to the language. Of course, this is what sets C++ apart from many other programming languages: It is specifically and intentionally designed for extension, and the language's facilities for generic constructs are extremely powerful. This exploration is at the core of the Boost libraries and the Boost community itself. Boost is about making programming in C++ more elegant, more robust, and more productive. As discoveries are made and best practices are shaped, a great challenge faces the C++ community; to share this knowledge with others. In isolation, there is limited value to these remarkable findings, but when exposed to a larger audience, a whole industry will evolve.

This book shows how to use a selection of the wonderfully useful Boost libraries, teaches best practices for their use, and even goesbehind the scenes to see how they actually work. The Boost libraries' license grants permission to copy, use, and modify the software for any use (commercial and non-commercial), so all you need to do is visit boost.org and download the latest version.

For all the C++ Standard Library aficionados out there, it is well known that a new revision of the Standard Library is in progress. From a standardization point of view, there are three primary areas where the C++ Standard Library is likely to change:

Fixing broken libraries
Augmenting missing features to existing libraries
Adding libraries that provide functionality that is missing in the Standard Library

The Boost libraries address all of these areas in one way or another. Of the 12 libraries covered in this book, six have already been accepted for inclusion in the upcoming Library Technical Report, which means that they will most likely be part of the next version of the Standard Library. Thus, learning about these libraries has excellent long-term value. I hope that you will find this book to be a valuable tool for using, understanding, and extending the Boost libraries. From that vantage, you'll want to incorporate those libraries and the knowledge enshrined within them into your own designs and implementations. That's what I call reuse.
